we waited long into the night...

Actually, it was the early morning hours before we heard our first whimper!
Junie Bee started her first stage of labor Tuesday morning with shivers and panting. Then she stopped until about 11pm that night. At 1am, she started pushing, and after 2 hours, we followed advice from the vet to take her to the emergency clinic (they were the only ones open!) for possible c-section. They were so nice! They x-rayed and thought she could deliver...one pup was in the canal and they thought she'd be okay. They gave her oxytocin and calcium and pup #1 (it's a girl!) was delivered at 4:20, followed quickly by #2 (boy), and #3 (girl). Pup #1 wasn't responding very well and she had to be revived with oxygen and meds. At this time we needed to switch to our regular vet (the emergency vet was closing). As we were packing them up, #4 (girl) came at 7:16 am! We waited, knowing there was a fifth, but she wasn't showing any more signs of contractions, so we quickly switched to our vet's office.
June Bug wasn't showing any more signs of having the last puppy when we got there, so the vet gave her pitocin and let the babies nurse to see if that would stimulate her into labor. The vet checked via xray to find that the pup was still way up in the birth canal and had a healthy heartbeat. After 3 hrs, we elected to have the pup delivered via c-section. Poor Junie! Puppy #5 (girl) was delivered around 11:15, a very healthy and happy baby, and after June Bug and pups were monitored a bit longer, we all got to go home and sleep!
